Settle the rules before day one
A calendar records the answer; it does not decide what counts. Which categories are frozen, whether groceries are in, and what happens the day you break it are all easier to agree on now than on day nine.
What people ask
- What are the rules of a no-spend month?
- You freeze one or two named categories for the month rather than all spending — rent, bills and groceries usually keep going. The rules worth settling before day one are which categories are frozen, whether a planned event is an exception, what happens on the day you break it, and where the money you did not spend goes. The full set is on the rules page.
- How do I use the calendar?
- Pin it up and cross off each day you spent nothing in the frozen categories. Crossing off is the point: a run of marks is visible from across the room in a way a note in an app is not, and the empty squares are the honest part.
- What if I break it partway through?
- Mark the day and keep the sheet. A month with twenty-two clean days is a month you spent nothing on twenty-two days, which is the actual result. Starting the calendar over is how a good month gets thrown away for looking imperfect.
- Is a no-spend month the same as a no-buy year?
- Same idea, different length and stakes. A no-buy year sets rules once and lives with them for twelve months, so the categories have to be ones you can hold that long. A month is short enough that you can freeze something you would never freeze for a year.
